The year of the “birth” of Virovitica is 1234, when the Slavonian Duke Koloman issued a charter to Virovitica, granting the former settlement the status of an independent royal trading city. The charter was extremely important in obtaining the full status of a city in the medieval times, at a time when many places in Slavonia did not have similar rights. The sequence of numbers 1234, the year of acquiring the status of a city, is woven in Virovitica city logo and numerical slogan today.
